Natasha Franck: EON-ID

EON-ID

EON-ID is the industry’s first RFID tag in the form of a thread that can integrate with textiles to power recycling

THE PROBLEM

Textiles have one of the poorest recycling rates of any reusable material. Over 99% of the clothing thrown away in the US can be recycled or reused, and more than 85% ends up in landfills. One of the biggest barriers to textile recycling is that we often don’t know what the clothes are made of, making textile recycling very difficult.

THE INNOVATION

EON-ID has developed the first RFID tag in the form of a thread that can integrate with textiles to power lifecycle transparency. Integrated RFID technology has the potential to power material transparency throughout the entire product lifecycle, as well as recycling.

THE VISION

If we could take unwanted clothes and turn them into new materials and garments, we could eliminate waste, end reliance on new natural resources and stop the devastating pollution of the fashion industry. This can be done with tags that can survive the entire product lifecycle, thus powering material transparency and recycling at end of life. In addition, EON.ID plans to use its platform to introduce the first global tagging system for textile lifecycle management and recycling.
