Peter Preuss, Ph.D., is the Chief Innovation Officer in the Office of Research and Development at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He leads an interdisciplinary team created to catalyze creative problem solving in the protection of human health and the environment. The team has developed the use of open innovation tools such as prize competitions to find innovative solutions to environmental problems, is actively supporting the development of nextgeneration portable air and water sensors, is expanding EPA’s role in citizen science, and has created a partnership to find new solutions to reduce nutrient pollution in waterways. To spur internal research innovation, the team hosts Pathfinder Innovation Projects, an internal seed funding competition for high-risk, high-reward research. Previously, Dr. Preuss was the Director of EPA’s National Center for Environmental Assessment, the National Center for Environmental Research, and the Office of Science Policy. Dr. Preuss received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
