Michael Schwager is currently Minister Counsellor (Education, Science and Technology) based at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC. Michael's role is to develop and implement strategies to strengthen Australia's engagement with the education, science, research, and innovation systems in the US and Canada.
Immediately prior, Michael was Head of the Industry and Small Business Policy Division of the Australian Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research. The Division provided advice on a range of policies affecting business competitiveness and growth, and small business and regulation reform.
Previously, Michael was General Manager, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industries, advising the Australian government on pharmaceutical and medical technologies industries, and stem cell and biotechnology policies.
While at Invest Australia, the Australian government’s foreign investment attraction agency, Michael was responsible for developing a strategic approach to investment attraction in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, information and communication technologies, and nanotechnology and advanced materials. Prior to his work in Invest Australia, Michael’s work for the Australian government involved international policy and trade issues in the areas of food, agriculture and energy. He has also worked for a large multinational accounting firm. Michael completed his Bachelor of Economics at the University of Sydney.
