LAUNCH: Closing the Loop

Nordic: Materials

Challenge Statement:

How can we - through new types of materials, or alternative ways of using known materials - significantly increase sustainability in production, manufacturing, and recycling?

Specifically, LAUNCH Nordic Innovation Challenge 2015 is focusing on innovations within the areas of:

Green Chemistry

LAUNCH is currently focused on positively transforming the system of materials and manufacturing, which can have dramatic social, environmental and economic impacts on the world. In order to harness the innovation needed to advance this system, LAUNCH has issued a series of global challenges to address key barriers. Our current challenge focuses on green chemistry, a crucial component in a sustainable materials and manufacturing system.

Nordic: Textiles

Specifically, LAUNCH Nordic 2014 is focusing on innovations within the areas of

  1. Closed Loop Solutions & Design for Disassembly

  2. Cleaner manufacturing & Green Chemistry

  3. Sustainable Investments & Procurement

  4. End-user Engagement

We are interested in innovations with potential to scale in 2 years, as well as game-changing early stage technologies and prototypes. Innovations can be business models, financial instruments, technologies and programs that accelerate research, education and capacity building.

Specifically, LAUNCH System: Fabric seeks innovations in:

The Earth, with its diverse and abundant life forms, including over 6 billion humans, is facing a serious water crisis.

LAUNCH hosted LAUNCH: Health, a global forum focusing on health issues, at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida from Oct. 30-31, 2010.   LAUNCH selected ten innovations that are preventive with a focus on nutrition, exercise, and health care. Specifically, the LAUNCH Challenge Statement focused on innovations providing and improving:

• Optimal nutrition (access, choice, and quality of nutritious food and required nutrients)

• Regular participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices.

LAUNCH successfully executed two challenges focused on water and health. The next global challenge focused on energy. LAUNCH and its partners believe that sustaining quality of life requires transformative advances in energy science and technology, along with new models, programs and behaviors. The LAUNCH: Energy Forum, which brought together innovators and council members, took place at the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida on November 11-13, 2011.

Beyond Waste

During the three day Forum at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA from July 20-22, LAUNCH innovators discussed their most pressing business and program issues with LAUNCH Council members, who represented the business, waste management, investment, international development, policy, engineering, science, communications and sustainability sectors. The sessions were designed to identify key challenges and opportunities for the entrepreneurs' innovations in an effort to more rapidly accelerate their solutions toward even greater real world impact.
