As Chief Scientist at Fonterra Cooperative Group, Andy has the global responsibility for leveraging external R&D capabilities, technologies and funding to enable Fonterra to achieve its business strategies and plans. Andy also has a governance role in Fonterra’s venture investing activities, which he established while he was the Senior VP – Venture Investments, based with Burrill and Company in San Francisco.
Andy joined Fonterra as the GM – Planning and Integration, where he led teams focused on intellectual property stewardship, external research alliances, project management and strategic capability development underpinning Fonterra’s Innovation Pipeline. He subsequently took up the role of GM – Ingredient Partnerships, where he led teams focused on growing the value of the business with Fonterra’s top customers through customer/consumer insights and applications development.
Prior to Fonterra, Andy was a senior executive at New Zealand’s first listed biotechnology company, where he held a number of scientific, corporate strategy and business development roles in key areas of the business. Before moving to New Zealand in the mid-nineties, Andy was a Research Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at UC – Irvine. He was a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University and Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Delaware. He obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Delaware and Yale University for his work in molecular development biology, and his BSc in Biology from Rhodes College.
